Remembering an Angel:
Michael John Smich

by Kevin Caruso

Michael John Smich was a handsome, intelligent, fun, popular, talented, patriotic, and caring young man.

And he was a hero who served honorably in the Army.

Michael served in Bosnia and was someone his fellow soldiers could always count on. He was a dependable, hard working, caring soldier, and he served his country with great pride.

And Michael was an excellent musician. He was a mandolinist and a singer and he loved to perform with his popular group “Lazy Bones.”

Michael also had a passion for sports and loved to play football and go waterskiing as often as possible.

And he adored children. Whenever he would get together with his younger cousins he would always joke with them, romp with them, and hug them like they were his own children.

And Michael always kept the children (and the adults) laughing whenever he was around – he had a wonderful sense of humor!

But most of all, Michael was a wonderful person who cared deeply for his family and his friends. And his caring nature was never more evident than when he found out that his cousin Caitlin was born with a heart defect. Michael was deeply saddened by the news so he organized a benefit at his house to help raise money for her medical care.

That was Michael. He loved his family, relatives, and friends and would always go the extra mile for them.

Another example of Michael’s caring nature occurred when his father passed away. His mother went through a very difficult time because of the death and Michael gave her, and the entire family, extensive support.

“Michael was totally there for his family when his dad died,” said Barbara, Michael’s mom. “He stood up to the plate and took control.”

Sadly, Michael passed away from suicide recently at the age of 33.

Barbara made the following statement on behalf of the Smich family about Michaels passing:

“His Mom, Brother and Sister and the rest of his family will always have a void in their hearts because of the loss of Michael  and he will be missed but will always be remembered and loved.”

Michael is now one of the greatest angels in Heaven.

We miss him.

We honor him.

We love him.

And we will never forget him.
