Mary Forbes thought she would never recover when she lost Robert, her 21-year-old son, to suicide in June of 2005.
But in December of 2006, she also lost Ian, her 24-year-old son, to suicide.
“It feels as if someone ripped my heart out,” said Mary. “It feels like I died after the suicides.”
Mary still feels very deep pain from the losses, and she wants everyone who is suicidal to know that suicide is NOT okay.
“Life is precious, choose life,” she said. “There is hope, there is another way…the answer is not death, things can be sorted no matter what the problem. My sons fought a good fight, but they gave up hope. They thought that no one could help them. They couldn't see any way out of their pain.”
And Mary is 100% right. Suicide is NEVER the answer. Getting help is the answer. If you are suicidal, you need to reach out for help NOW.
Mary’s pain has been overwhelming. She was devastated after losing a son to suicide, and losing a second son to suicide has created a level of pain that seems unbearable. But she is persevering, and much of her strength has come from her faith: “Having lost two sons to suicide, only the power of the Holy Spirit allows me to be here today.”
And Mary knows that many people who lose loved ones to suicide become suicidal themselves, and this concerns her because she knows that suicide is not okay for suicide survivors. So Mary wanted to give some extremely important advice to all suicide survivors (and everyone who is suicidal):
“Suicide is not okay. Seek help. Choose life. Everything can be sorted.”
Mary, God bless you. Your words of wisdom, caring, and love come right from your heart…and you have one of the biggest hearts in the world.
I love you Mary,
