Suicide Survivors: The Importance of Humor

Suicide Survivors: The Importance of Humor

by Kevin Caruso

Suicide is horrible. It is extremely painful and exceedingly difficult to cope with. And it is compounded by the fact that a strong stigma is associated with it.

And if that wasn’t enough, there are many people who are ignorant about suicide and make insensitive or cruel comments to suicide survivors.

So what can you do to cope?

Answer: everything possible.

Of course, getting into counseling and joining a suicide support group are on the top of the list.

And, at some juncture, when the pain and shock ease, and you are at a point where you NEED to laugh, go ahead and watch a funny movie, read a joke book, watch funny sitcoms, and ALLOW yourself to laugh.

Again, only do this when you are READY.

Laughter is therapeutic.

You will find that in time you will ALLOW yourself to laugh more and more at senseless little things. And you will find that the laughter will HELP YOU HEAL.

Humor is very personal, and everyone reacts differently to different types of humor, so find out what you enjoy and are comfortable with, and allow yourself some laughs.

Laughter, used in the right way at the right time, can indeed be a type of medicine.

Use it in whatever way is best for you.

I love you,

Kevin Caruso
